I have been writing and rewriting "Rum" for the better part of a decade. Every time I work on it, it becomes more unfocused and vague. The older I get, the less I can relate to the characters in the previous drafts. I have halfheartedly planned for production numerous times only to call it off. However, after working on The Maladjusted (which dealt with similar themes and was also set in Virginia bars and pool halls) in the summer of 2011, I regained interest.
